Let’s be real – NYC apartments aren’t exactly known for their spacious layouts. But it’s the compromise people make to live in such a beautiful and vibrant city!
Whether you’re married with kids in a two bedroom apartment, or just trying to make your one bedroom feel less cramped, maximizing space in a NYC apartment will be heavily impacted on your design choices. The good news? You don’t need a total renovation to make your space feel bigger. In fact, as a New York City interior designer, I rarely recommend a full renovation for this type of refresh – my sensory approach to decorating can completely transform the look and feel of your home, without having to break the bank.
My Favorite Storage Hacks for Small NYC Apartments
Storage is everything in a small space, and I’m all about making it work without making it look like you’re stuffing things into every corner. You’d be surprised how much bigger the space feels once everything has a home.
Here are some of my go-to solutions:
Multifunctional furniture: Think ottomans with hidden storage, beds with built-in drawers, or a stylish console that comes with drawers.
Vertical storage: NYC apartments may lack square footage, but they make up for it in height! I like to maximize every inch with shelves, cabinets, and wall racks—anything that gets clutter off the floor and onto the walls.
Hidden storage: Baskets under the bed, or even a sleek bench with storage in the entryway. The less clutter in sight, the more spacious your home feels, and the calmer you feel.
Multi-Functional Furniture: NYC Apartment Must-Have
A lot of my clients will opt for furniture pieces that serve a double purpose. Otherwise, is it really NYC apartment-approved?
A few of my absolute favorite furniture finds for maximizing space in a nyc apartment:
A sofa bed: Because a guest room isn’t happening, but you always need extra space just in case.
A wall-mounted desk: Tucks away when you don’t need it, expands when you do.
Nesting tables: They give you extra surface space when needed but disappear when you don’t.
Storage coffee tables: Because let’s be honest, there’s always extra “stuff” that needs a home. Investing in pieces that adjust to your needs is hands down one of the best ways to maximize space in a NYC apartment without sacrificing style.
Tricks to Make Your NYC Apartment Look Bigger
Even if you can’t physically add square footage, you can create the illusion of more space.
here's how:
Keep pathways open: You can add wall decor to the hallway, but keep it open—avoid furniture that blocks natural walkways.
Use mirrors strategically: They reflect light and make rooms feel airier (pro tip: placing one across from a window works magic).
Stick to a light, neutral color palette: Lighter walls, furniture, and textiles make a space feel brighter and more expansive. If you need some pop of color, use it for the styling pieces, such as pillows and table decor.
The Remedy To Feeling Calmer In Your Space? Decluttering.
I can’t speak about maximizing space in a NYC apartment without highlighting decluttering. You may have a lot of stuff, but if you keep it behind closed doors, you’ll instantly feel better not having it overstimulate your eyes. Be creative in the way you organize those things behind closed doors, so that they don’t haunt your dreams at night. I like to recommend for my clients to do a regular purge of things that they don’t use, and I help them figure out smart storage solutions. Believe me, it’s therapeutic.
At the end of the day, small spaces don’t have to feel small, and can be very designed. But you have to be strategic. With the right design tricks, your NYC apartment can feel open, functional, and actually enjoyable to live in. Want help pulling it all together?
