Englewood Kitchen Remodel – Refreshing the Heart of A Home

Written by Beatrice Tokayer

Kitchen with wood cabinets and an island with pendant lighting overhead

As an Englewood interior designer, when I took on this project, I knew this kitchen needed a calm, fresh feel without losing the timeless beauty of the existing wood cabinets. I’m a big fan of repurposing, and if there’s anything that can be re-used, I’m all up for it. My goal for this Englewood kitchen remodel was to create the perfect balance—blending stylish patterns, light colors and modern finishes to create a space that feels both inviting and serene.

Why I Designed The Kitchen Around The Cabinets

Cabinets are one of the biggest investments in a kitchen, and these particular ones had a beautiful wood finish that felt warm and timeless. You just don’t get rid of cabinets like that, unless you’re completely changing the layout of the kitchen. Rather than replacing them, I chose to work with them, re-designing the kitchen around them to bring a fresh feel to the space, while keeping the cost down.

The Key Updates in This Englewood Kitchen Remodel

1. New Countertops

The old countertops needed to go. They were too busy and overstimulating. I decided to swap them out for a sleek, white quartz with subtle grey and gold veins. This new design complements the cabinet finish and brings in a cohesive look to the space.

2. Modern Backsplash

The backsplash is a continuation of the countertops, creating a seamless flow throughout the space. For individuals who are easily overstimulated by certain colors and patterns, it’s important to keep it simple. This is why I chose this clean, continuous design.

3. Updated Lighting

I replaced the outdated, broken fixtures with simple, modern lighting that enhances the ambiance of the space. I opted for small, clear pendants, so as to keep it simple and not take away from the flow. If I would have opted for any larger, or opaque fixture, it would have dominated the design of the kitchen- which we wouldn’t want.

4. Fresh Paint and Hardware

The wallpaper was stripped off, and the walls got a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore Simply White (OC-117) paint to brighten up the space. I also swapped out cabinet hardware for a more modern look.

5. New Flooring

The floor tiles were removed, and I opted to replace them with the same wood flooring that was used throughout the rest of the house, creating a seamless flow between the spaces. Yes, in continuation with our theme.

The End Result: A Calm And Serene Kitchen Transformation

This Englewood kitchen remodel proves that you don’t need to get rid of everything in order to give it a calm, modern update. By keeping the existing cabinets and working strategically around them, I was able to create a modern and calm kitchen that feels fresh, while maintaining its timeless charm.

If your kitchen makes you feel uncomfortable because it’s overstimulating, simplifying the patterns and choosing a light color palette can make all the difference! After all, you want to be able to spend time there, cooking and feeding your family. If you feel good, so will your family, and the food will taste better as well!
