Summary
This Tenafly living room design focused on creating a calm, cozy retreat for busy parents using thoughtful layout changes, soft color choices, and intentional styling. By repurposing existing furniture and adding vertical storage, the space transformed into a peaceful adult area that still welcomes the whole family, proving that small design shifts can completely change how a room feels.
Intentionally designed as a space to carve out time to relax, recharge, and unwind after a long day of work and responsibilities, this Tenafly living room design focused on creating calm for the family in the most central area of the home.
The Challenge: When A Home Doesn’t Feel Restful
Busy, on-the-go parents contacted BRT Interior Design to help with the design of their cozy living room in Tenafly, New Jersey. This couple works a lot, and they were finding that when they got home after work everyday, it felt like everything was all over the place. Toys, shoes, remotes, and schoolwork. You name it.
Stepping home after a long day of work, they felt even more stressed when they saw all the clutter. Once the kids were in bed, they didn’t even feel like there was a space for them to unwind and relax, without having to look at all the kids’ toys and accessories.
How do you wind down after a long day if there’s nowhere to do so? Your body just stays on alert at all times.
Overall, they felt more annoyed and exhausted than they should, and they just craved a comfortable adult spot of their own to unwind and regroup after a long day. But how can you do that when you have three little children?
Creating a Solution Through Design
We stepped in to provide a solution to the frustration they were experiencing, because for us, there’s always a solution when it comes to design. We set out to think outside the box and create a functional, relaxing, and cozy living room where they could finally carve out some alone time, step away from the commotion, and recharge.
How Thoughtful Design Brings Calm Back Into the Home
A Tenafly Living Room Design That Supports Calm and Comfort
As we discussed their goals, vision, and budget for this Tenafly living room design, we learned that they wanted to keep a lot of the existing furniture. Our mission isn’t about new furniture, trends, or designing a room from scratch. It’s about how a space makes a person feel.
We got creative in changing the layout of the furniture as well as repurposing their existing furniture. Changing the layout alone made the space feel completely different, even before styling the room.
The couple was very sensitive to certain colors and really didn’t like the previously existing dreary gray paint color on the walls. In fact, they described the room as feeling “sad.” We brought in lightness and freshness by changing the wall color to a creamy white, while adding a soft, colorful rug as the accent of the room, which brightens up the space and makes it feel happy.
Styling With Intention
For styling, we added life to the room by installing floating shelves on either side of the fireplace. We believe it’s better to bring things upward and make use of vertical space. Using vertical space helps keep the room feeling open instead of crowded on the floor.
The decor pieces we added were cohesive in color and varied with plants, books, and family photos, helping the space feel warm and cozy without overwhelming the family visually.
A Space That Works for Parents As Well As The Whole Family
The end result is an organized, clean, and peaceful living room space that allows the parents to renew their energy and spend time together as a couple.
And for the record, their children are absolutely welcome in the space. Their toys and accessories, however, are not. There is a designated place for all of that, just not in this room.
Parents need an adult space to unwind and recharge. Otherwise, how are they supposed to be the best version of themselves as parents?
This couple now feels a sense of restored balance and is absolutely in love with their new cozy living room. Their energy feels so renewed that they’re happy to have their kids spend time with them in the space, because the room feels calm and peaceful for everyone.
The best part is that they are committed to keeping the space neat and organized at all times, because they love it so much and want to keep it this way. When you love your space this much, you naturally invest time in keeping it looking its best, because it feels so good to be in.
What’s next?
As a parent, do you have a space of your own to relax and recharge? What would it feel like to unwind at the end of the day without thinking about kids’ toys, Legos, building blocks, or magnet tiles?
That’s what I call true relaxation. And it’s possible- even for parents.
If you’re craving a space like this Tenafly living room design in your own home, we’d love to help!
frequently asked questions
Do I have to buy all new furniture when working with an interior designer?
Not always. According to Beatrice Tokayer, interior designer and sensory design expert, many spaces can be transformed by changing the layout and styling existing furniture, which is exactly what was done in this Tenafly living room.
Is it realistic to keep a calm living room when you have young kids?
Yes. Beatrice Tokayer explains that creating clear boundaries for toys and designing intentional adult zones helps families maintain a peaceful space without making the room off limits to children.
Can changing paint color really affect how relaxed a room feels?
Absolutely. Lighter, warmer tones reduce visual heaviness and help create a softer emotional atmosphere, which was a key part of this redesign.
How do you create a relaxing adult space inside a busy family home?
